Ever since I was in my early teens, I’ve struggled with accepting loads of things about me, like most do, from how I look to how I speak, how I laugh, how I deal with bad situations. This list goes on but over the past year and a half or so I’ve been on a journey of self-love! And let me tell you, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done!
I’m nowhere near finished or perfect at loving myself but here’s just a few tips that I’ve found work for me;
1. I choose to.
It’s not as easy as waking up and thinking ‘I’m going to love myself today’, however, it is saying ‘I’m going to try and like myself today. I’m going to try my hardest to be nice to myself.’
Just setting that mindset first thing in the morning is really helpful and gets me in a good head space to continue the day.
2. Imagine your younger self.
Above my bed I have a photo of myself from when I was about 3/4 years old, looking very cute and innocent! Every time I think a negative thought about myself, I can imagine saying it to the little girl in the picture and immediately I start thinking more positive thoughts. Every day 3 year old me encourages and inspires me to be the best possible version of myself I can be that day, even if all I can say I achieved is getting out of bed.
3. I learnt to give myself a break.
While being 20 I’ve realised that, although some people may argue with me, some people’s bodies will never be like others. Some people’s bodies will never be ‘as slim’ or ‘as toned’ because we just aren’t all built in the same way.
We don’t all have the time to be working on our mind, bodies and general health 6-8 hours a day, 6 days a week! Nor do many of us have the money to have a fancy gym membership with a personal trainer and meal planner and dietician and nutritionist… And the best thing is that’s okay!!
I would rather look back on photographs and see myself happy and healthy in the body I have now than look back and see someone who’s focusing more on her insecurities than about having fun! In 25 years, I’m not going to be bothered whether I was toned or not!
4. Do what makes me feel good!
To show I love myself, I like to treat myself to things that make me feel good! Whether that’s clothes, getting my hair and nails done, eating that Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, going to that gym class, taking half an hour out of doing work to read or knit… or even if that’s simply telling myself how proud I am of myself
Another thing that I do to make myself feel good is being around the right people. There’s certain people in my life that I LOVE spending time with because when I leave they make me feel re-energised and inspired and just generally excited about life.
Those are the people that I’ve learnt you should keep close! 🙂
